Kalash tribes, a unique non-Muslim minority group, celebrate their annual harvest festival with much pomp and zeal from Aug 20 to Aug 22 every year in the mountains of Hindkush. They sing, dance and play to thank Mother Nature for a bountiful harvest through this festival. They prepare their traditional food especially on this occasion and drink wine with their women to show their pleasure. This year, the festival will be held on Aug from 20 to 22!
Uchal Festival: A Glimpse into the Vibrant Celebrations of the Kalash People
Nestled in the Chitral district of Pakistan, the Kalash people stand out as a unique and fascinating ethnic group, the smallest religious minority in the country. Their homeland, the Kalash Valley, is a treasure trove of history, traditions, and vibrant festivals that mark the passage of time.
Distinct from the majority Muslim population, the Kalash people adhere to their own ancient animist beliefs. This sets their festivities apart, infusing them with a unique character that resonates deeply with their cultural identity. Throughout the year, the Kalash observe a colorful array of celebrations, including the Uchal, Phoo, and Chomos festivals.
Among these, the Uchal Festival takes center stage, illuminating the summer months with an explosion of joy and gratitude. Held annually in August, this lively gathering serves as a tribute to the divine for bestowing upon them bountiful harvests and a fruitful season for foraging. During this time, men and women gather in the village square, their movements swaying to the rhythm of ancestral dances. As the festival's prayers echo through the air, a procession winds its way up to a plateau beyond the village of Balangkuru, where the night unfolds in a whirlwind of exuberant dance.
The Uchal Festival also serves as a catalyst for social cohesion, bringing families and friends from neighboring villages together in a tapestry of shared experiences. It's a time for feasting, laughter, and revelry, a testament to the enduring spirit of the Kalash people.
With its rich cultural and spiritual significance, the Uchal Festival stands as a beacon of the Kalash identity, a testament to their deep-rooted connection to the land and their unwavering faith in the divine.

Surrounded by the majestic Karakorum Mountains of Gilgit Baltistan, Lukpe Lawo or Snow Lake, is a glacial basin at an elevation of 4877 m (16000 ft.), spanning over 16 km (10 miles). The basin connects two mighty glaciers of Biafo and Hispar, both spreading into opposite directions from Hispar Pass (5128m). The total length of these two glaciers is about 100 km (61 miles) forming into a frozen river which is the world’s longest continuous glacial structure outside the Polar Regions.

K-2, the Mountain of Mountains, is located in the heart of the Karakoram Range, standing as a sublime pyramid at the head of the Godwin Austin Glacier. Uniting with a second glacier at Concordia to form the mighty Baltoro Glacier, it is along this surreal mountain trail that our route will take us. Described by many as the "Throne room of the Mountain Gods" this unique mountain region is home to four peaks above 8000m, making it the largest concentration of the highest peaks on earth. The journey to get there will first take us first by plane over the stunning Karakoram Mountains and into Baltistan, before heading by jeep to Askole where the track ends and the walking trail begins.
Pakistan is widely known as a top destination for adventure tourism. And with its rich culture and warm hospitality, it's also a great place to travel with kids.
Pakistan is one of the world’s great surprises, with an incredible diversity of scenery – from the world’s biggest mountain glaciers to the sparkling waters of the Indus River – alongside some of the most beautiful forts, mosques and archaeological sites in the Subcontinent. It is the cultural bridge between India and Central Asia and home to some of the most hospitable people you’ll ever meet.
With its incredible range of spectacular scenery, Pakistan offers some truly epic road trips. With a rented car and driver – or your own wheels – you can drive the world’s most dramatic mountain highway, follow historic invasion and trade routes, drift between Sufi shrines and desert forts, or follow the mighty Indus River from the high mountains to the Arabian Sea.
One of Asia’s most fascinating countries, Pakistan lies off the mainstream travel map, but those who do visit rave about its historic monuments, spectacular scenery, fabulous food and richly layered culture. Visiting throws up some challenges, but it’s getting easier all the time, helped by an improving security situation and easing visa regulations.
